On Friday, 26th November it was announced that for the remainder of the Allianz Premier 15's season (2021/22), the BBC will show one match per round on the BBC sport app, the BBC Sport website, and also BBC iPlayer.
After the recent success of the Red Roses during the Autumn series, winning all of their matches, it was revealed that they attracted more than 3 million viewers at peak times on the BBC across all 4 matches. This was huge for the growth of women's rugby, a big step in terms of development.
The BBC showings of the Allianz Premier 15's began with the Bristol Bears vs Wasps Women match on Sunday, 28th November. Table leaders Bristol Bears went into the match undefeated after several rounds of this competition. The score ended 36-17 to the bears, a brilliant match throughout.
The next round of fixtures begins the weekend of the 4th December, with the BBC broadcasting Saracens vs Bristol Bears, a top-of-the-table fixture. Watch live on BBC iPlayer, the app, or the website.
News today (2/12/21) is that the BBC will continue to broadcast the Six Nations, a hit with the fans, known for its fierce competitiveness. Last season, we saw the women's six nations branch off from the men's and play the fixtures in a different dedicated window, and that's what we'll see happening in late March 2022.
The BBC have announced that they will show all 15 games across the TV and iPlayer, with matches also being shown in full in both Italy and Ireland. Chief executive of Six Nations, Ben Morel says: "Increased visibility is key for the growth of the women's game".
The tournament begins on 26th March, and culminates on April 30th, with the final three matches being played on the same day.
England are current title holders and grand slam winners, but will any of the other nations take this title? This tournament will show a lot about what we're likely to see in the rescheduled 2021 world cup, held in New Zealand.
